A single-vehicle accident in Paso Robles claimed the life of Manuel Trejo, 46, of Atascadero after his Ford pickup rolled down the embankment off Highway 46 East just west of Buena Vista Drive.
Officers believe the accident happened late Sunday night or early Monday morning. When investigators arrived on the scene at 9:30 a.m. Monday, the truck's engine was cold.
Meanwhile, Atascadero residents Isaias Lopez, 25, and Victoriano Murillo, 27, died early Sunday morning after their SUV went off Templeton Road just north of Atascadero and rolled two or three times.
A Caltrans maintenance worker alerted authorities after discovering the scene of Trejo's accident Monday morning. The Caltrans employee had stopped on the side of the highway after noticing a damaged Buena Vista Drive sign that Trejo's vehicle apparently hit.
"There's nothing to indicate other vehicles were involved," Mattke said, adding that drivers who may have witnessed the accident are encouraged to contact the Paso Robles Police Department.
Both men are from San Juan Nuevo Parangaricutiro in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. They worked at a car wash on El Camino Real in Atascadero, said friend Cayetano Contrellas.
Lopez, who was driving the vehicle, died in his seat with his seat belt on. Murillo was one of two passengers ejected from the vehicle upon impact.
Another passenger who was ejected from the SUV was in critical condition Monday evening in the intensive care unit at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, hospital spokesman Ron Yukelson said.
