Black leaders pay homage to woman who revolutionised civil rights.... Senator Obama Barrack... Millions mourn the death of civi
Senator Obama Barrack who called Ms Parks, a genuine hero and the President and CEO National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) also paid homage to Ms Parks, who was a member of the Montgomery branch of the organisation and served as secretary from 1943 to 1956.
Despite being jailed, fined $14 for public misconduct and eventually losing her job as a seamstress in a department store, it was Ms Parks’ defiance of the laws citing that front row bus seats were for whites only, whereas black people were made to give up their seats as the buses filled up, that spurred the abolition of segregation in the southern States.
Moving to Detroit in 1957 with her husband, after Montgomery’s employers failed to take her on because of her activism, Ms Parks still took an active role in the civil rights movement for which she received many awards. That included being given the country’s most prestigious honour for a civilian, the Presidential Award of Freedom by former President, Bill Clinton.
