NEW CANAAN -- A 69-year-old town man and his dog were killed yesterday afternoon after a teenage driver struck them while they were crossing a street near downtown, police said.
Police declined to identify the man. Friends at the scene said the 17-year-old is a student at New Canaan High School, which is less than a mile from the accident site.
The man and dog were hit two days after New Canaan police began a crackdown on jaywalking and unsafe driving in downtown crosswalks, stationing extra-duty officers in busy areas.
The man and his dog were not in a crosswalk at the time of the accident, Ferris said. The closest crosswalk is about a block north, Ferris said.
The accident occurred at 2:17 p.m. at South Avenue and Mead Street. The girl was driving north on South Avenue when she struck the man and his yellow Labrador, who were crossing from west to east, police said.
Police yesterday said they did not know the driver's speed. Yesterday evening, police said they still were investigating and had not filed charges.
Alex Drexler, 17, said he was driving to football practice at the high school when he saw the accident in his rear-view mirror. The man and the dog were lying motionless in the road, Drexler said.
A half-hour after the accident, the girl's dark gray Lexus IS-300 was in the road, the windshield shattered and the hood damaged on the passenger side. The driver's-side door was ajar, the car's warning system beeping.
A light blue baseball hat was lying on the sidewalk, and a pair of twisted sunglasses, a man's left shoe and a dog leash were scattered in the street, each item circled by police in white chalk.
At one point, a woman parked her car near Mead Street, where traffic was being rerouted to Park Street, and ran toward the police tape, pointing to the Lexus and shouting, "That's my niece!" Police spoke with the woman, and she left shortly afterward.
New Canaan High School Principal Tony Pavia and other school officials also went to the scene. Pavia declined to comment except to say that the school provides support services for traumatized students.
