Fashion might not rank high on the elementary-school curriculum, but pupils at an Evanston school came out in style this weekend to help the smallest victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Teachers in wedding gowns and students in formal dresses and soccer jerseys modeled their favorite outfits Friday in After the Storm: FUNdraising Fashion Show.
The event took place in the auditorium of Dawes Elementary School, 440 Dodge Ave., at 6 p.m. The school’s student council teamed up with teachers and staff to organize the event.
Proceeds from the show went to two programs: Children of Hurricane Victims, which is run by the American Academy of Pediatrics, and Bright Future. A suggested admission fee of $3 was collected at the door.
Jennifer Brennan, a Two-Way Immersion teacher at Dawes, helped her class translate the posters and parent letters advertising the event into Spanish.
“In my class I have three student council members so we wanted to get everyone involved and make sure that their parents knew about the festivities,” she said.
Rebecca Westphal, a third-grade TWI council member, and her friends decided to wear ethnic formal dresses to show the diversity of their friendship and portray different cultures. Rebecca put on a Mexican dress for the event.
“I was originally going to go as triplets with my two best friends but then our moms came up with another idea since we always dress the same,” Rebecca said.
The fashion show opened with a play, Shelter of Faith, that was organized by drama teacher Megan Hallissey. The play told the story of the hurricane and the people it affected.
